Before Surgical treatment, any acute or chronic medical complications of obesity (sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems) should be brought under control.
A care plan is devised which aims at providing long term diet control, family support and major swings in weight. A team approach, as practiced in our institute, will include nutritionist, psychological counseling, hormonal expert care and fitness advice in addition to surgical experts.
General measures:
Increased physical activity: A daily routine of 20-30 minutes of cardio exercises and weight training is recommended before and after surgery. Patients with knee joint problems are advised to consider swimming as a regular exercise.
Low fat energy restricted diet: A high protein diet with appropriate calorie restriction is recommended for weight loss prior to surgery and for maintenance afterwards.
Medications: Weight control pills are not recommended Facial Rejuvenation long term use. The weight loss achieved is not significant and there is high chance of rebound weight gain after discontinuation of the medicines. All of these weight loss drugs are associated with significant side effects that often limit their use.
Intragastric balloon treatment for short term / Pre-operative Weight Reduction:
The BIB® System (BioEnterics® Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) System) is a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical aid in the treatment of obesity. In conjunction with a supervised diet and behavior modification program, it can help you achieve the health and aesthetic benefits associated with weight loss.
The BIB® System consists of a soft, expandable balloon, the placement tube and a filling system so a physician can orally insert the weight loss aid.
Once inserted in the stomach, the empty balloon is filled with sterile saline. When full, the balloon is too large to pass into the bowel and will now float freely in the stomach.
The BIB® System is designed to assist with weight loss in people who are at least 40% above their ideal weight (as defined by the Metropolitan Life Insurance 1983 Weight and Frame tables) and who have failed to obtain prolonged weight loss with other weight control programs.
The BIB® System may be particularly useful for people considered too overweight or at increased risk for vital surgery. The use of the BIB® System to successfully reduce weight prior to surgery may help reduce the risks associated with surgical procedures on overweight patients.
The balloon currently can be used for six months. Longer periods of use are not recommended. Over time the acidic content of the stomach will weaken the balloon material and cause the balloon to deflate.
